A Peek Inside My Grocery Cart

When some of my friends started to try out plant-based diets they found it helpful to get an idea of exactly what I’m buying at the grocery store. So I thought for any of you that are interested in trying to be a little more plant-based I would share some of my grocery store staples. I picked up all of these groceries at my local Whole Foods. I looooove farmers markets so when it’s farmers market season again (so soon!) I will be getting lots of my fresh produce at the markets!

Fresh produce

I heard some great advice about grocery shopping in the documentary Forks Over Knives, they said that the vast majority of your time at the grocery store should be spent in the produce section. Such good advice! So whenever I go to the grocery store I focus most of my time getting an assortment of fresh fruits and veggies. Here’s an example of my typical haul. I always buy bananas, tomatoes, berries and greens. The rest varies depending on the season.

Power Energie Greens

Speaking of greens I love these power energie deep green blends! It’s a blend of baby spinach, green chard, red chard, and baby kale. This is my go-to base for salads. Just add some fresh veggies and you’ve got a delicious nutrient-packed salad. Sometimes I like to just use fresh lemon juice as dressing with salt and pepper. But you don’t want to do that all the time because the acidity of the lemons is hard on our teeth’s enamel. So, when I’m not using lemon juice I have a few salad dressings I normally rotate.

Brianna's

Brianna’s Real French Vinaigrette Dressing has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember.

Brianna's

My grandma turned me onto Brianna’s Blush Wine Vinaigrette Dressing. It has a sweeter flavor, whereas the Brianna’s Real French Vinaigrette dressing is more savory.

Annie's Dressing

I love love love Annie’s Organic Goddess Dressing. My sister turned me onto this stuff. I’ve actually never used it on a salad. I always use it more as a dip. If you follow me on instagram then you know I love dipping snow peas in it. My sister and I have even put it on stir fry and dipped chips in it. We can’t get enough!

Waffles

I also always try to have these Nature’s Path Organic Waffles around the house for a quick breakfast. They have lots of fiber, 5 grams of protein and they’re a great source of Omega-3s. And of course they’re egg-free, dairy-free and delicious.

Oatmeal

For breakfast I also always try to have this Nature’s Path Organic Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal around the house. It comes in handy when I need to eat really quickly! It has 5 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. The apple cinnamon is my favorite but they have many other flavors.

Almond milk

I buy Almond Breeze Vanilla Almond Milk instead of cow’s milk. I use it in cereal and for baking. Some other brands of vanilla almond milk are wayyy to sweet for me so this is my current go-to. I also use Almond Breeze Coconut Almond Milk and Rice Dream Rice Milk.

Quinoa

And lastly, another staple is Near East Roasted Red Pepper & Basil Quinoa Blend. This stuff smells amazing when it’s cooking. I use it often for lunch or dinner. It’s great on its own or with veggies added to it. Check out my instagram for a few different ideas for how to make a meal out of this quinoa.

Those are some of my current staples that you’ll always find in my grocery cart. What are your plant-based grocery staples? Share with us all!

GOOD STUFF!!! Just sayin’ even on a New York patio or rooftop, you can grow some of your own food and save the largest part of your grocery bill! … although last year I did grow Rainbow Quinoa and it was the coolest and most beautiful plant, but when I harvested the plot, I only got enough for a few meals and the work was an especially longgggg process, so I will be buying quinoa (bulk section) from now on… Rock on plant strong chick! 😉
