Sustainable Vegan Bags (+discount code!)

Three words I love to hear: sustainable, ethical & cruelty-free. 🙂

And Australian brand Ahimsa Collective‘s bags are all of those. Last fall the team at Ahimsa Collective reached out to me to tell me about their brand and let me try out one of their bags to see if I liked it. I chose their signature “zip the lip backpack” and as you can see from the pictures above I absolutely love it and wear it everywhere. Here are some of the great things about this brand that make me so happy to wear them and share them with you:

Sustainable Materials

Every detail in the design of these bags has the environment in mind and each bag is made with eco-friendly materials. Some of the sustainable materials they use include:

piñatex – a vegan leather made from pineapple leaves. It is a by product of pineapple farming and since the leaves are a part of the fruit (that normally gets discarded) they require no additional land or water, meaning the production of these leaves has virtually no environmental impact.
recycled polyester (aka ecoprene) – made from would be textile waste.
cellulose – a washable paper material that is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified.
deadstock – in an effort to place no extra demand on this Earth’s limited resources, Ahimsa Collective also creates bags out of textile “waste” from fashion and other industries (such as leftovers from large fashion brands).

Eco-Packaging

Even their packaging is environmentally friendly and is made with recycled cardboard, mailers that are biodegradable and will break down in compost and a special tissue paper called “Noissue” that is also FSC certified.

No Animals Harmed

In sanskrit the word ahimsa means, “Respect for all living things and avoidance of harm towards others”, so all Ahimsa Collective’s bags are free of animal products, making them vegan and cruelty-free.

These are the qualities of a brand that make me so happy to support them!

And what I love about the backpack is that it’s so lightweight and perfect to wear for hours on end. I wear it walking Pani around NYC, running errands, traveling, etc. It holds just enough while not being too big or too small, and with the zip down sides it’s adjustable to make it a little bigger if needed.
